Artist: The Tweeters
Title: The Berchem Tapes (May 1976)
The Tweeters were a remarkable Antwerp-based experimental Free Jazz/Prog band that played together in the first half of the 1970's.
The band consisted of visual artist, trombonist and singer Liliane Vertessen, her partner, multi instrumentalist Jean Van den Plas, sax and piano player Edmond Van Lierde, his brother William 'Beasthoven' Van Lierde, double bass driver Paul Feyaerts and drummer/percussionist Ronnie Dusoir.
All members, with the exception of William, were previously involved in one way or another with the free jazz scene around WIM (Werkgroep Improviserende Musici), mostly known for the birth of free improvised music in Belgium with Fred Van Hove, André Goudbeek and Ivo Vander Borght as its main protagonists.
Within this scene, which was known for its constant line-up changes and performative madness, all members were present in tons of temporary combo's before forming The Tweeters. Edmond Van Lierde often played with his then partner Nicole Van Den Plas (who later moved to Germany, where she would continue to play with the likes of Sven-Åke Johansson, Alfred Harth and Thomas Cremer amongst others) and an ever-revolving cast of musicians and artists such as Edmond’s brother William, Manu Cox, Albert Szukalski, Puck Swinnen, Ronnie Dusoir and André Detiège. Ronnie Dusoir played in groups with Fred Van Hove, in the Kris Wanders Quartet and in The Full Moon Trio with André Goudbeek, Liliane Vertessen and Jean Van den Plas improvised with Julian Beck’s Living Theatre, Paul Feyaerts was part of The Full Moon Trio as well and later ran the Damberd Jazz Bar in Ghent.
The Tweeters subsequently arose from the ashes of these collaborations and formations, many of which burned bright and fast before disappearing. The band name is a wordplay on the gemini star sign (tweeling in Dutch) which most of the members were blessed or cursed with. Their first concert probably took place at King Kong in Antwerp. No one remembers exactly.
