Artist: Jacques Beloeil
Title: Look
Very Limited!
Final Image’s fourth release is Look, a compilation of three works by the composer, mastering engineer and artist Jacques Beloeil, on the anniversary of his passing in 2023.
Initially self-released digitally on Bandcamp in 2021, Look features three long form pieces by Jacques Beloeil, composed in the early to mid 2000s and reworked through the years.
The opening eponymous track has never been released physically and is a hidden gem in Beloeil’s repertoire: its delicate cadence captivates us immediately, wanting us to listen further, longer, to stay in it.
The other two tracks are edits of previously released work on Entr’acte, both compositions having the power to generate images, or even tell stories. The Bath of Stars is a 'sonic film' where we can wade through different scenes, while Guillotine is a sharp but crafted piece evoking the harshness of the movements of the ancient killing machine.
This limited edition CD-R comes in a clear plastic sleeve with paintings by Jacques Beloeil, CD artwork by his daughter Unica Yabiku, and an insert with Beloeil’s own liner notes.
The design - directed by Laura Lot - wants to pay tribute to Beloeil’s life and work, not only as a composer but also as a painter: the front cover features an early self portrait, reminiscent of Bacon. The release features two different printed artworks: 25 copies include Chromosome Game, and 25 others Voyage au bout de La Nuit. Both paintings, though done at different periods, present Beloeil’s signature style:
scrupulous details that reveal hidden stories and characters lurking underneath layers of paint. The density of his paintings surprises the viewer each time, constantly inviting them to look, closer and closer.
This release would not have seen the day without the help and support of those dear to Jacques, so our biggest thanks go to Ute Waldhausen and Unica Yabiku for helping out, contributing and allowing us to keep alive Jacques’ legacy.
All profits will go to Jacques' family.
Jacques Beloeil (1963-2023) was a musician, painter and mastering engineer. He was born in France but quickly made London his home, where he lived most of his life until he passed in 2023. He released most of his work on Entr’acte - the label he co-founded with Allon Kaye in 1999 - with Bidules (2009) being his most notable one. His last two releases, Exit (2018) and Forthcoming (2021), were released on Stellage. Beloeil was also a sound engineer and has mastered a vast series of releases including work by Adi Newton, John Wall and Kallabris, among others. Until his passing, he never stopped painting and produced a large body of rarely seen work.
